SULAWESI

Dates: From October 15th, 2027 to November 5, 2027

Sulawesi’s fauna – a bizarre cocktail of Australasian and Asian ancestry – is home to tarsiers galore, along with some majestic macaques and truly impressive bats including the stunning Stripe-faced Fruit Bat. Then there are three species of Babyrusa, surely the world’s best pigs, along with a hugely diverse set of rodents. Most species on Sulawesi are found nowhere else and there is still a great deal to be discovered here. In short it is a top tier Mammal Watching destination. Become one of the first to discover its secrets on this tour.

Information about the tour

This tour is an adventure that offers a unique chance to contribute to both conservation and science. We will be surveying areas where very little biological research has been undertaken and there is every chance we will come across species that have been lost or are new – to science. We will spend long hours each night searching for mammals in some of the best areas of forest left on the island, and will visit some spectacular bat caves during our days.

At Mammalia we follow the philosophy that “any fool can be uncomfortable in the jungle”. In other words we try to find the most comfortable accommodation possible that will still give us access to the best areas. Sulawesi is no exception and for most of this tour we will stay in hotels, some quite comfortable others quite basic, but you will always have a comfortable bed and a shower.  For one or two nights on this tour we will have to camp. But after a long night’s walking it is usually no problem to fall asleep no matter how thin your mattress.

The trails we will follow are generally good and much easier to navigate than some of those in West Papua for example. In some sites there are some moderately long hikes uphill, so participants need a reasonable level of fitness but nothing out of the ordinary. We are never in a rush and there will be ample opportunity to rest and take in the beauty of Sulawesi.
